The Billroth Young Surgeons Award will honour those who have enhanced the quality of Hernia surgery, through innovation and scientific excellence. The purpose of this award is to provide significant recognition for excellence in teaching and research, to encourage its pursuit and to promote an academic approach in Hernia surgery. The recipients of the award, selected by an international committee (led by the EHS 2017 Scientific Committee Chair) during the 39th Annual International Congress, receive 700 Euros and a diploma.  The prize can be received only once.

Eligibility criteria

  • Abstract presenter needs to be below 35
  • Abstract presenter needs to practice in an European country
  • Abstract presenter should be in a training position
  • Abstract presenter should be the first author of the abstract
  • Abstract can be oral, video or a poster abstract
  • Abstract should not have been previously published but may have been submitted for consideration to a journal
  • Abstract cannot be under consideration for an award by another organisation
  • Abstract cannot be presented at an international meeting before EHS 2017 in Vienna

Criteria for evaluation

  • Scientific content; i.e. study design and performance
  • Innovation
  • Presentation of data


Please submit the abstract to be considered via the regular abstract submission. All abstract types can be considered for the award (oral, video and poster abstracts). During the submission, you will have the opportunity to let us know if you wish to be considered for this award.


The winners (one for each abstract category - oral, video and poster) of the Billroth Young Surgeon Award will receive the prize and the diploma during the closing ceremony of the congress. During this session, the winners will have again the chance to give the award winning presentations.
